my new body of work realised in Ghana, “what home means”

home is definitely one of the biggest wound or question that challenges me on a daily basis.
for me and many, the subject of home almost immediately triggers anxiety.
home is defined as « the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household ».
it covers the difficult topic of family and the place where we build our foundations.
being the product of immigration, wars, displacement, colonialism, it is pretty challenging to feel home anywhere and feeling alone comes to me pretty easy.
feeling alone comes from an inaptitude to find peace within and feeling like we truly « belong ».

in response to this i’ve developed healing practices that, i will admit, do not make me feel less alone during dark times, but ease pain for a while and put things into perspective:
i try to find home everywhere.
i capture every piece of information that touches me, in the hope that i’ll get to create a safe and secure home with beautiful beings inside one day if my angels allow me to.
i try to be as warm as i know to anyone who passes my way.
this is actually maybe why i created selflovetribute and decided to be vulnerable as a job, using art as a restorative practice.

by doing so i realised; home is a feeling people (including you) offer. just like heaven or hell, it’s an energy people carry.
it can show up as a place, routines, or be reflected in individuals around us.
this new body of work will focus on the concept of home; is it places, routines, people, feelings?
love, always,
elia
